When it comes to pain and discomfort, it simply cannot be denied that one of the most uncomfortable and painful experiences a person could ever suffer through is jaw pain. Although jaw pain can be caused by a whole variety of different things including arthritis, a fracture, misalignment, or a dental abscess, the most common problem which is associated with jaw pain is known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMD for short. TMJ disorders can be caused by a number of different things including grinding of the teeth, nail biting, or excessive chewing of gum. No matter what the cause of your jaw pain may be, one thing that is for certain is that you will want to reduce the pain and cope with the pain as soon as possible. Many people unfortunately have to live with joint pain and as a result have to identify techniques that help them to live with and cope with the pain. If this applies to you or somebody you know then here are four tips to help you cope with jaw pain.
Try to massage the jaws – One very effective method of coping with jaw pain and helping to reduce the pain is to actually firmly massage the jaws on a daily basis. Try to get into the habit of massaging the joints of the jaw found just in front of your ears first thing in the morning and last thing at night before bed. Massaging the jaws in this way means that tight muscles contributing towards the pain and discomfort will relax.
Break bad habits – As mentioned previously, one of the most common causes of joint pain and discomfort is excessive chewing of gum, grinding of the teeth in bed, or biting your nails. Other common causes can be bad posture or doing things such as cradling your phone in between your cheek and shoulder or resting your chin on the palms of your hands. These bad habits will not only contribute towards jaw pain, but they will also exacerbate the pain and prevent it from easing off. To help you to live with this discomfort on a daily basis, try to break new habits and stop doing things that could make the problem worse.
Use hot and cold therapy – Another great way of relieving jaw pain is to use hot and cold therapy on the painful area of your mouth. Using a hot pad or something similar for around 20 minutes will help to relax the muscles. Afterwards, apply an icepack for around 10 minutes as this will reduce inflammation. Switch between the two until the pain begins to subside.
Sensibly use over the counter pain relief – Sometimes when the pain is unbearable or very uncomfortable, as a last resort you can turn to over the counter pain relief such as aspirin or other pain killers. Always ensure that you go with an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Be very careful when using these medications and only use them as a last resort as you don’t want to risk developing a dependency for them. If used sensibly as instructed however, these medications can make a real difference.
